distribution networks for the city of Chicago. This project represented the first installation of central chilled water plants and network in the Chicago Loop.
These two district cooling plants employ state-of-the-art ice generation and control technology to provide cooling for 20,000 and 40,000 tons respectively. Plant 2 is the first plant in Chicago to utilize ammonia as a coolant.
RMCA services included site assessment, assistance with land acquisition, and facilitation of city of Chicago public approvals. After sites were selected for the plants, RMCA provided design coordination and construction management services for both the building facility and all underground utility services. RMCA developed project budgets and schedules, solicited and evaluated general contractor bids, prepared the Owner-contractor agreement, and served as Unicom's representative to manage the construction.
RMCA provided detailed planning, scheduling, and investigation of existing utilities to plan the route of the new chilled water lines in the public way within the Loop. The lines were installed at night and on weekends. As a result of extensive coordination by RMCA, the chilled water distribution network was installed on time, with minimal disruption to the public, and without an incident of significant damage to existing utilities.
RMCA's high level of project coordination, quality assurance, and technical expertise enabled the delivery of the $40,000,000 plant on-time and on-budget. |
